Philosophy & Curriculum

Philosophy of Curriculum

The curriculum at Great Bridge Christian Academy is chosen with much prayer and research. Nothing is to be presented to the students that could undermine their faith. All truth is God’s truth; therefore, every subject taught must have biblical principles at its core. Faculty and staff members must be born again Christians who show evidence of a strong Christian testimony in word and deed. They are expected to be active members of a Bible-believing local church. In addition, teachers must be qualified in their teaching fields. They must exhibit a teacher’s spirit and a servant’s heart. What they teach by their lives will be remembered long after the subject matter information is lost. Christian education is an alliance of the Christian home, the Bible-believing local church, and the school. It is the purpose of Great Bridge Christian Academy to assist the home and the church, never to usurp their authority. We must provide a support structure that helps to form and nurture vibrant Christian citizens.

Philosophy of Teaching and Technology

Great Bridge Christian Academy places a high importance on the academic success of each student.  We have a balanced approached to the complete education of the child. The strategic use of A Beka Book, Bob Jones Press, and Saxon Mathematics curriculum exposes each student to varied pedagogical perspectives.  Technology is incorporated into each classroom, but we take the focus away from the technology itself and place it directly on the learning and teaching it facilitates. GBCA blends the approach of traditional education with modern technology to prepare students to succeed spiritually, physically, and academically.

Academic Departments

A Foundation that will Last a Lifetime!

Today, in the wake of alarming trends in public schools, parents are becoming increasingly concerned about their children’s education. Many years ago we decided to address this situation and began the Great Bridge Christian Academy Preschool.  Since then, hundreds of children have completed our excellent academic Preschool program.

Overview

Our hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities target all aspects of early childhood development, while emphasizing the love of Jesus Christ. The exposure children receive to Bible, phonics, numbers, art, music and movement, books and reading, physical education, and science, provides a wealth of experiences for the children on which to build a solid educational foundation. Our goal is to provide the highest quality program where loving kindness, gentleness, consistency, safety, and security are of utmost importance.

Teachers

Our commitment to high standards is also reflected in the people who work at GBCA. Our teachers are experienced and receive ongoing training. We nurture the lasting bonds that develop between our faculty and families. Everyone that is employed by GBCA has been fingerprinted and background checked.

Spiritual Approach

Our teachers include a daily Bible lesson, including songs, Bible stories, and scripture verses. Teachers also use this time to present life application lessons that connect to children’s lives in a meaningful, age-appropriate way. In all of our curriculum, we pray that God will be perceived as our Creator and in control of our lives and the universe.

Playgrounds

Children learn through play! GBCA is currently rebuilding our preschool playground. During adverse weather conditions, the children play in the gymnasium. The teachers monitor all aspects of playground safety, and the equipment is continuously monitored to make certain that it is safe and properly maintained.

Enrollment Age Requirements

The birthdate deadlines for our school year are as follows:

  • PK3 – Children must be 3 and potty trained before starting.
  • PK4 – Children must be 4 on or before September 30th to enter our 4’s program.

Discipline & Behavior Management

Praise and positive reinforcement are effective methods of the behavior management of children. When children receive positive, non-violent, and understanding interactions from adults and others, they develop good self-concepts, problem solving abilities, and self-discipline. GBCA also uses time-out when a child does not respond to positive reinforcements. Numerous positive reinforcements are in place within each classroom.

Great Bridge Christian Academy focuses on the introductory grades, K5-5th, to provide the academic basics for all future learning.  The intense phonics approach from A Beka is the cornerstone of this academic development. This approach to reading is proven to increase reading ability. Success in reading translates to success across all academic spectra. Each student is graded in phonics through all three years of early childhood learning, grades K5-5th. Students also begin reading groups in kindergarten and continue them through second grade. We realize that all students do not learn to read at the same moment in time, but we find that the A Beka phonics program meets the educational needs of the overwhelming majority of our pupils.
The A Beka cursive writing program enhances the phonics program. Educational studies indicate that efforts in teaching phonics, reading, and cursive writing complement one another. Again, cursive writing does not usually begin until the 3rd grade in the public schools (depending on your area) but you will be impressed by the manual dexterity of your students as they develop proficiency in this skill. The academic result is the positive educational impact on reading proficiency that results from teaching phonics, reading, and cursive writing interactively.
The teaching of numbers and math begins in K5 with the mastery of counting from 1 to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Students at GBCA continue to grow in math during these early years as they add math facts, math combinations, money recognition, telling time, and other applications of numbers and math to their knowledge base.
Lower elementary students, K5-2nd, also receive instruction in spelling, history, science, art, music and P.E. to round out their academic day. Firm and consistent discipline radiates throughout the classroom. Repetition and drill are a vital part of the daily activity. Students have age appropriate homework that is designed to reinforce their daily learning and develop parental involvement in their learning process.
Third grade students enter their academic world with concrete educational abilities compared to the pre-concrete abilities of their younger counterparts. At GBCA, we approach the upper elementary years, 3rd-5th, with a concentrated focus on verbal comprehension as well as vocabulary development, and a concentrated focus on mathematical problem solving as well as mathematical procedures. Curricular materials from Abeka and Bob Jones Press are integrated during these years to increase the cognitive approach to learning.
The academic difficulty increases noticeably as the students progress through the upper elementary years.  Many educators believe the transition from 3rd grade to 4th grade is the most difficult academic transition students make. The homework load increases through these years, and 4th and 5th grade students must learn to study to pass their tests. Help classes are incorporated as needed.  Yearly achievement tests give ongoing feedback for the success of our academic goals and objectives.
Bible is the foundational subject for all of our educational philosophy. Students have Bible class every day and chapel once a week. Each class receives music instruction designed to enhance the worship of our Savior. Private music lessons are available at the discretion of the parents and the teacher.
Grades 6-8 are a time of considerable transition and change. As the bridge between childhood and adulthood – physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually –there is much at stake.  Great Bridge Christian Academy’s middle school faculty and staff understand the pressures of these years and create a safe, loving environment where each child can grow in grace, wisdom and truth (Luke 2:52).

We educate our middle school students in biblical truth and practical biblical wisdom, teaching all subjects from a biblical worldview. We also provide a rich variety of academic programs to meet a broad range of interests and needs, giving every student the opportunity to explore, develop and discover. The aims of our middle school program are to partner with Christian families to build on the foundation laid at home and at church and to prepare students for the high school experience ahead.  Great Bridge Christian Academy middle school students are building their foundation for life-long learning. They are challenged to build a foundation in the core subjects of Bible, Math, English, Science, and History.
